How do I spot a legitimate online casino in Canada?

Canada has no national online-casino licence. Spot a legitimate site by checking the live register for your province first: Ontario is iGaming Ontario (iGO), 19+; Alberta is AGLC / AiGC (including PlayAlberta), 18+; British Columbia is PlayNow (BCLC), 19+; Quebec is Espacejeux (Loto-Québec), 18+. Match the exact operator URL — not a lookalike .com. Then read a public method such as the TrustFacts Trust Gauge. A high score is not a licence. Do not use a VPN. Lists by province: Canada.

There is no national Canadian online-casino licence

Taking Canadian players isn’t the same as being provincially registered — that’s the gap this checklist is for.

Canada does not issue one national online-casino licence. Legal real-money play sits under four regimes:

Ontario — iGaming Ontario (iGO) / AGCO, 19+.

Alberta — AGLC / AiGC (including PlayAlberta), 18+ (private market from 13 July 2026).

British Columbia — PlayNow / BCLC, 19+.

Quebec — Espacejeux / Loto-Québec, 18+.

Rest-of-Canada desks on TrustFacts are geography, not a fifth provincial licence. An Ontario or Alberta player still needs the live register for their province.

Step 1 — Identify your province, then open the live register

Start with where you sit. Open the live provincial register (or Crown site) before you trust a logo, a bonus, or a review score.

Ontario (iGO / AGCO), 19+

The live iGO player directory is the source of truth for private Ontario products. If the operator is not listed, it is not an Ontario product. PlayOLG is the Crown vertical with a different cashier — do not treat it as the same path as a private iGO brand.

Alberta (AGLC / AiGC + PlayAlberta), 18+

Alberta’s private iGaming market launched 13 July 2026. Confirm PlayAlberta or a brand on the live AGLC registrant search with an AiGC agreement in practice. An Ontario iGO URL is not an Alberta licence.

Detail: Alberta casinos, is online gambling legal in Alberta.

British Columbia (PlayNow / BCLC), 19+

Legal real-money online casino in B.C. is PlayNow only. Private iGO or AGLC URLs are not B.C. licences.

Detail: British Columbia, are online casinos legal in British Columbia.

Quebec (Espacejeux / Loto-Québec), 18+

Legal real-money online casino in Quebec is Espacejeux only. French terms on the official site win when they differ from a marketing page. Espacejeux is Loto-Québec.

Detail: Quebec.

Step 2 — Match the exact website and operator name

Same logo is not the same company. A lookalike .com, a U.S. sister, or a rest-of-Canada brand can share branding and still sit outside your provincial register. Match the exact operator name and URL on the live register — not a close cousin.

Step 3 — Age, location, KYC, payments

Age is set by province (18+, 19+, or higher where the market requires it).

You need to be physically in the market the product is licensed for.

Interac is a payment rail, not a licence. Crypto, Google ads, and familiar logos are not licences either.

Expect KYC before a first withdrawal on a regulated product.

Do not use a VPN to join a market that blocks you — that usually breaches terms and is not a legality shortcut.

Step 4 — Only after the register: read a public method

After the register check, read a public method. TrustFacts publishes a Canada-first public 0–100 Trust Gauge (seven pillars, 30 signals). Rank isn't sold. Visit links only show at 60+ and hops never move the score. A high Gauge is not a licence and is not advice to deposit.

Full method: The Gauge. Primer: What is a Trust Gauge score?. The register and the integer are different jobs: the iGO register is the licence.

Rest-of-Canada honesty

Our rest-of-Canada desk is geography for players outside the four regimes above. It is not a provincial licence. A rest-of-Canada hop is not legal for Ontario or Alberta players who need iGO or AGLC. See rest of Canada.

Red flags

Offshore or Kahnawake / Curaçao footers marketed as “legal in Canada” without naming the provincial register.

Bonus or free-spins bait that skips the register check.

“Best casino Canada” national #1 tables that mix brands illegal for your province into one list.

VPN instructions to join a blocked market.

Treating any review-site score (including a high Trust Gauge) as a substitute for iGO, AGLC, PlayNow, or Espacejeux.

Worked offshore example: Is Stake legal in Ontario?.

How TrustFacts fits (after the register)

TrustFacts is an editorial Trust Gauge desk. Rank isn't sold. Low scores stay visible. Visit links only show at 60+ and hops never move the integer. We are not a casino, payment processor, or regulator, and we cannot recover funds. Some visit links may be affiliate. Start at the TrustFacts home.

Compare how review sites work: which casino review sites Canadians should trust. Side by side: review sites.

What this page is not

Not a casino list. Not a bonus guide. Not a licence. For best-by-province lists after you know your register, use Canada.

Age is 18+, 19+, or 21+ by market. Help: compliance, responsible gambling.

Quick answers

How do I know if an online casino is legitimate in Canada?

How do I check if a casino is legal in Alberta?

No. B.C. legal real-money online casino is PlayNow only (19+). Quebec is Espacejeux only (18+). Private iGO or AGLC brands are not those licences.

No. The Gauge is an editorial 0–100 score. Legality is the live provincial register. Confirm the register first, then read the integer.

“Canada-legal” claims that skip the provincial register; bonus bait before a register check; VPN instructions into ON/AB; national #1 tables that mix illegal brands for your province; treating any review-site score as a licence.
